Bring Your Own Device

Since 2021 students in years 4 to 12 have been given the opportunity to take ownership of a laptop as part of the “Bridging the Digital Divide” (BDD) Program. The College is switching to a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) Program for Digital Learning from 2024 for Years 7 to 12. (Class sets of laptops will be purchased for use within the classroom for Years 4 to 6 in 2024.)

Students will be permitted to continue using their current laptop at home and at school as per the current arrangement. The purchase of a new laptop for Year 7 to 12 students is not compulsory; support of current laptops will continue to be provided by the College as much as possible. Physical damage will not be covered.

The College recommends Edunet as the preferred option for purchasing laptops for 2024. It is not mandatory to purchase laptops from Edunet however the amount of support available for devices purchased elsewhere will be limited. The College does not recommend Apple laptops or devices running iOS (the College operates on a Windows infrastructure). The Kaniva College BYOD Portal can be accessed at http://kanivacollege.technologyportal.com.au and includes products available for purchase and relevant pricing.

All students in Year 7 to 12 will be expected to bring their device to school on a daily basis. Spare devices will be available for students on a needs basis if their usual device is being repaired or they have failed to bring their device to school. Loan machines will need to be collected at the start of the day and returned at the conclusion of school; they will not be permitted to leave school property.

BYOD devices will not have the Department of Education and Training (DET) image installed that students have been accustomed to. BYOD devices will come with a ‘clean install’ of Windows, with students required to download and install software required for their classes for free from a DET website using the College’s internet.

Before using any BYOD in the school, a BYOD User Agreement must be signed by the student and Parent/Guardian. While BYOD’s are not owned by the school, the DET Acceptable Use policy must be adhered to, and any material stored on or accessed using the device is subject to review by College staff.
