On Friday, 24th April we hosted a “Welcome to Kaniva College” Breakfast for staff, students, and the wider school community. It was wonderful to see everyone gathered together, enjoying delicious bacon and egg sandwiches and taking the time to connect as a community.
The breakfast was followed by our annual Badge Ceremony, where we were proud to present Kaniva College badges to our Prep and new students, as well as our SRC members, House Captains, and School Captains. We were delighted to be joined by Emma Keely MP, West Wimmera Shire Councillor Helen Hobbs, and Kaniva College Council President Penny Gordon, along with many family members and friends.
Following the ceremony, our Junior and Senior School Captains led a special Anzac Day Service, which was both moving and meaningful.
It was a fantastic way to round out the first week of Term 2. Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning, and a special thanks to the VCE VM students, Mr King, Julie, and Holly for their hard work in organising, preparing, cooking, serving, and packing up.
Junior School Captains Zoe Staehr and Billy Salt ran an Easter Colouring Competition for junior school students and staff. They had some amazing entrants, which made choosing the winners very difficult, and in some age groups, this resulted in a tie! Congratulations to the winners!
On Thursday, we celebrated World Maths Day by inviting parents/carers and friends to undertake a range of maths related activities with their child/ren. We held a whole school Rock, Paper, Scissors Challenge! It was a fierce competition coming down to Year 3 student Billie Hendy and Year 7 student Harry Dickinson. There was a tense shoot out, with Harry taking the win and the choccies! Thank you to all of the parents/carer and friends for joining us; thank you to Julie for putting on a delicious spread of scones and sandwiches for our guests; and a huge thank you to Miss Steel for coordinating this event.

On Wednesday, 25th March, 15 of our junior and senior students competed at the Greater Western Region Swimming Championships in Horsham. The competition at this level is extremely impressive, so it’s a huge achievement for our students to qualify to compete at this level. We were so impressed with their dedication and sportsmanship on the day. Congratulations to Christian Charalambous who placed 2nd in the 12/13 Years Boys 50m Breaststroke with a time of 45.77 seconds, just half a second behind 1 st place. Thank you to Mr Feduniw and Mrs Dickinson for taking the students and to the family members who attended to cheer them on.
Last week our Year 8 to 10 students attended the Wimmera Science and Engineering Challenge in Horsham on Thursday and our Year 5/6 class attended on Friday.
This was a fabulous opportunity for our students. Thank you to Mrs Salt and Mr King for accompanying the Year 8 to 10 students and Mr Staehr, Miss Bates and Mr Bates for accompanying the Year 5/6 students. It was a brilliant day for each group.
On Friday, Mr Staehr was recognised for his dedication and commitment to the teaching of Science and Engineering. He has been attending the Wimmera Science and Engineering Challenge with Kaniva College students since 2018. Mr Staehr was presented with a special pin, and his contributions were celebrated on the day. Congratulations Mr Staehr, we are so lucky to have you at Kaniva College.
On Tuesday, 17th March, we held our Athletics Sports Day. We had an amazing turnout of family and friends, creating a fantastic atmosphere across the oval, with activities running throughout the day. Our students once again demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, giving their best efforts in every event and cheering on their peers and teammates. A highlight of the day was the much-anticipated Year 12s vs Teachers race, where the students gave it their all, but were ultimately no match for the experience and talent of the teaching staff! Congratulations to our Age Group Champions and the winning House, Baarluk.
We had 12 Secondary students qualify to compete at the Little Desert Senior Swimming Carnival, which was held in Horsham on Thursday, 26th February. This week, Year 11 student, Holly Tink, was successful in gaining a position as a CEP Rural Youth Ambassador. Holly will travel to Melbourne each term to take part in three-day student forums, where she will meet with rural students from across Victoria. The Ambassadors participate in forums and speaking with politicians and various groups involved in education. It is a wonderful opportunity for Holly to share her experiences of education in a rural setting. A big thank you to Maurice Billi from CEP, who travelled to Kaniva to meet with Holly and took the opportunity to catch up with some of our past Ambassadors.
On Friday, 13th February we held the Prep to Year 12 Swimming Sports Day at the Kaniva Memorial Swimming Pool. It was amazing to have so many parents/carers, grandparents and community members there to cheer along the students. Congratulations to all of the competitors on your enthusiastic participation on the day and your equally impressive cheering. A special congratulations to the winning house, Meruko and our Age Group Champions.
National Apprenticeship Week Australia (NAWA) is a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships and traineeships. It recognises the essential role they play in developing workforce skills, growing businesses, and building a strong Australian economy. NAWA brings together employers, apprentices, schools, training providers, industry associations, and government to: Recognise the contribution of apprentices and trainees; Highlight the importance of apprenticeships as a respected and rewarding career pathway; and Inspire young people and career-changers to see apprenticeships as a future worth pursuing. At Kaniva College, in 2026 we have three students undertaking School-Based Apprenticeships. Jett Rabone and Lachlan Coad are both undertaking a Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology at Wise Farm Equipment in Bordertown, while Ajay Bradburn is undertaking a Certificate in Painting and Decorating with the West Wimmera Health Service, across their local sites. This is an exciting opportunity for the boys to develop their workplace skills and make a headstart towards their future career pathways while still completing their VCE Vocational Major.
Welcome to our Prep class of 2026!
