On Tuesday, 26th May, 12 of our Primary and Secondary students travelled to Warrnambool to compete in the Greater Western Region Cross Country Championships (Regionals).
The track is notoriously challenging, with hills and a range of different surfaces to negotiate. There were 50 to 80 entrants in each race, which meant that our kids were up against very competitive fields. However, they put everything they had into their runs, with many achieving personal best results. The following students had amazing results, qualifying for the State Cross Country Championships in Yarra Glen in July:
Girls 11 Years: 5th Zoe Staehr; 9th Annabel Carter
Boys 12/13 Years (Secondary): 6th Jackson Staehr
Special mentions to Sophie Staehr, who came 12th in the Girls 9/10 Years race; a position that would have qualified her for State last year, but the cut off has changed for this year; and Zahra Stephens, who came 20th in the Girls 17-20 Years, a particularly competitive category.
In Week 5, all Year 3 to 10 students participated in a three day online competition, testing
their multiplication and division knowledge, called Victoria Rocks. Students were allowed
access to the platform for up to 30 minutes a day, earning individual points and points for our
school.
We had some amazing results. Students who achieved top three in their class were
acknowledged with certificates. These people were:
Year 3/4
1st- Stella
2nd- Indie
3rd- Darcy T
Year 5/6 A
1st- Lola
2nd- Archie D
3rd- Amy
Year 5/6B

2nd- Isla L
3rd- Tim
Year 7/8

2nd- Harry D
3rd- Ruby D
Year 9/10
1st- Aurora (2nd in the school)

3rd- Mikayla
It is also important to acknowledge our top classes:

2nd- Year 9/10
3rd- Year 5/6 B
Well done to all students who took part. We look forward to participating in this event again
next year.

On Tuesday, 28th April we held our Prep to Year 12 Cross Country event at the Kaniva Recreation Reserve. The event was well attended by family and community members, which was wonderful to see. The cheering from the crowds was amazing. Congratulations to all of our students who took part, for your enthusiasm and efforts and a special congratulations to our Age Group Champions, new Record Holders and the winning House, Meruko.
On Friday, 24th April we hosted a “Welcome to Kaniva College” Breakfast for staff, students, and the wider school community. It was wonderful to see everyone gathered together, enjoying delicious bacon and egg sandwiches and taking the time to connect as a community.
The breakfast was followed by our annual Badge Ceremony, where we were proud to present Kaniva College badges to our Prep and new students, as well as our SRC members, House Captains, and School Captains. We were delighted to be joined by Emma Keely MP, West Wimmera Shire Councillor Helen Hobbs, and Kaniva College Council President Penny Gordon, along with many family members and friends.
Following the ceremony, our Junior and Senior School Captains led a special Anzac Day Service, which was both moving and meaningful.
It was a fantastic way to round out the first week of Term 2. Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning, and a special thanks to the VCE VM students, Mr King, Julie, and Holly for their hard work in organising, preparing, cooking, serving, and packing up.
Junior School Captains Zoe Staehr and Billy Salt ran an Easter Colouring Competition for junior school students and staff. They had some amazing entrants, which made choosing the winners very difficult, and in some age groups, this resulted in a tie! Congratulations to the winners!
On Thursday, we celebrated World Maths Day by inviting parents/carers and friends to undertake a range of maths related activities with their child/ren. We held a whole school Rock, Paper, Scissors Challenge! It was a fierce competition coming down to Year 3 student Billie Hendy and Year 7 student Harry Dickinson. There was a tense shoot out, with Harry taking the win and the choccies! Thank you to all of the parents/carer and friends for joining us; thank you to Julie for putting on a delicious spread of scones and sandwiches for our guests; and a huge thank you to Miss Steel for coordinating this event.

National Apprenticeship Week Australia (NAWA) is a nationwide celebration of apprenticeships and traineeships. It recognises the essential role they play in developing workforce skills, growing businesses, and building a strong Australian economy. NAWA brings together employers, apprentices, schools, training providers, industry associations, and government to: Recognise the contribution of apprentices and trainees; Highlight the importance of apprenticeships as a respected and rewarding career pathway; and Inspire young people and career-changers to see apprenticeships as a future worth pursuing. At Kaniva College, in 2026 we have three students undertaking School-Based Apprenticeships. Jett Rabone and Lachlan Coad are both undertaking a Certificate III in Agricultural Mechanical Technology at Wise Farm Equipment in Bordertown, while Ajay Bradburn is undertaking a Certificate in Painting and Decorating with the West Wimmera Health Service, across their local sites. This is an exciting opportunity for the boys to develop their workplace skills and make a headstart towards their future career pathways while still completing their VCE Vocational Major.
Welcome to our Prep class of 2026!
